Quality of Tanzanian coffee
The Tanzania Coffee Research Institute has played a major role in helping the farmers to increase their yield. There are two major coffee varieties produced in Tanzania and they are:
1 Robusta: Robusta coffee is predominantly cultivated in the western areas along Lake Victoria in the Kagera region. This constitutes 30% of the total coffee production in Tanzania.
2 Arabica: Arabica production is split between the country’s mountainous Northern Zone and rainy Southern Highlands, which means that there is a clear difference in flavor between the two.
Northern coffees tend to have a pleasant aroma, a rich acidity and mouthfeel, and a sweet, balanced taste. The region is rich with mineral nutrients found in the region’s mountainous volcanic soils that adds certain special traits to the coffee beans
Southern coffees, meanwhile, are characteristically medium-bodied with fine acidity. They generally have good fruity and floral aromas and flavors
Why is Tanzanian Coffee highly rated?
- The quality of the coffee beans depend on a number of factors, such as the cultivating style, growing altitude, climate, soil chemistry, harvesting, processing conditions, drying method, storage conditions (temperature, humidity), transportation method (container type and size), roasting conditions, grind size, packaging, age, and brewing method. Tanzanian coffee beans have met the high international standards set by international importers.
- Tanzania Coffee Research Institute has developed a soil fertility database for coffee growing areas throughout Tanzania and district reports have also been compiled. This helped development of a coffee-yielding prediction and Integrated Soil Fertility Management which helped Tanzanian farmers to increase the quality of their crops.
- Tanzanian farmers use packaged botanical extracts as biopesticides for the management of bugs that affect coffee crops. Tanzanian farmers distance themselves from using chemical pesticides, which is well welcomed by international importers.
The pleasant aroma emerging from a cup of Tanzanian coffee is a caffeinated invitation to energize your body.
